Let's Get Started!

Talk About The First Day
o   Talk with your child before they start school
o   Be prepared to answer questions 
     §  Where will I eat?
     §  Where will I play?
     §  What will I do there?

Visit The Classroom In The Spring 
o   Talk with your child’s teacher
o   Visit the: classroom, lunchroom, playground, etc.
     §  This may ease any concerns 

Let Your Child Know That It’s Ok To Be Scared
o   Normalize the situation
    §  Others have been scared too (siblings, cousins, friends)

Be Sure That Your Child Is Well Rested And Fed
o   Your child will have an easier time transitioning if they go to bed early and eat a good breakfast 
o   Get into a schedule 

Help Your Child Develop A Sense Of Responsibility
o   Get items together for school 
o   Complete homework
o   Let you know about important notes

Take Kindergarten Seriously 
o   Show interest 
o   Let them know that school is valuable 
o   Read notes
o   Attend meetings and events at the school 

Transitioning Into Middle School

Changes:
   o   Larger school
   o   More students
   o   Separate teachers and classrooms



Tips For Making It A Smooth Transition:
   o   Search for announcements, schedules, and events on school’s website
   o   Accompany child on tour of the school (include their friends in the experience)
   o   Take advantage of summer programs at the school
   o   Get a copy of your child’s class schedule and help to familiarize them with it
   o   Get a copy of the school’s handbook and review with your child
   o   Encourage your child to join extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, etc.)

   o   If your child has an IEP, meet with individuals at the school to present any concerns
   o   Help child with time management skills
   o   Avoid overreacting to grades (they will be faced with new demands in Middle School)
